DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy has reportedly shut down the official message boards of DreamTheater.net and MikePortnoy.com due to the leak of the new DT album, "Octavarium", on the Internet. He has replaced the link to the Bulletin Board on both sites with a countdown clock to 12:00 a.m. June 7, 2005, the release date of the new album.
Has Lars taught us nothing about marketing and popularity tactics???
Will this escalate to DTCops? ala

The band has peaked so I dunno what they are hiding from the fans.

Mike's an odd egg. He has this bug up his ass about CDs leaking in advance, and yet he's encouraged DT bootlegs in the past, even to the point of providing outtakes and such to said bootleggers.
I'm pretty much "over" DT these days anyway. Still a great live act and talented as all get-out, but their more recent releases have lacked luster.

The main difference between them is one of them is a shitty has-been drummer for a band that is way past its prime and has lost all touch with its original fanbase and vision and the other is Mike Portnoy. Unfortunately his band seems to be heading down the same path but nowhere near the career nuclear implosion like Metallica pulled a while ago.
Dream Theater may have peaked but their recent material is still Loads and Re-Loads better than anything Metallica has shat out the past decade. Portnoy, likewise, could drum circles around Lars even if he had to be quadruple amputated and had to play with his sticks in his ears and kick the double bass with his hip stumps.
