Dudes who like to print backpatches and stuff

Post by melkor » Sat March 28th, 2015, 5:05 pm

I was messing around with some vector quantization techniques when I was bored and was inspired to try quantizing an image so that it could be screen printed (like onto a backpatch or something) using only a few colors. Probably photoshop already does this but that shit is for media nerds.

If anyone cares, basically what I did was transform into the CIELAB colorspace then do a simple k-means clustering. Ran a test image using six clusters (i.e. six unique colors) and I think it turned out kinda kool. Some simple denoising techniques could make it look a bit smoother.

The technique is very simple and can easily produce image masks suitable for making multiple screens for different colors.
