We should all respect cops. Most of them have had a whole ten weeks of training before they were turned loose on society with a gun and an inferiority complex.

Dude. You don't even know. I'm a public defender, and in the past year I have seen:

    * an officer put on administrative leave because, instead of interrogating the transvestite subject, the officer had sex with him, in the precinct
    * officers do a controlled delivery of 1.5 kilograms of cocaine, yet in between the "controlled delivery" and transport to the crime lab, 400 grams go missing
    * a whole class of cases dismissed because a group of cops were routinely lying about drugs being thrown down to the ground

And, of course, there was the shooting in Atlanta. These are just the examples that jump immediately to mind. For instance, there is an officer in Lawrenceville who has has his own blog. About a year ago he posted an entry about how much fun he has harassing Mexicans. He is comfortable enough with that conduct that he didn't even have a second thought about posting. I have had far too many clients tell me that, "it didn't happen that way." Sure, the client has a vested interest in the case. But I here the same things over and over, which leads me to believe that the officers aren't always truthful.

Obviously, there are good cops out there. But, the training really is too short. Most officers are coming from high school and only have ten or sixteen weeks of formal training. I have heard far too much, seen too much in my work, and the training really is too short, for me to give police officers the benefit of the doubt.

Arguably the most important job in our society is composed primarily of last year's bottom quarter of high school graduates. If that's not reason alone to question authority, I'm not sure what is.

thats probably true for many cases....

my boyfriend is actually about to graduate from the Dekalb Police academy. His training is for a grand total of 27 weeks (3rd longest in the country) Over 1000 people applied for his academy class...only 60- something got in. I guess what my point is here that for Dekalb, they have one of the best training programs in the country (some of the poeple in Daniel's class flew in from all over including Chicago just so they could get the training) and I think that most of these cops are good or at least they have common sense. I have had to deal with them for a variety of reasons (including a car accident this past week) and they did a good job and helped me stay sane through whatever situation I was in. I got to stick up for them because of my boyfriend and some people in my family were highly respected cops in Hartford... Just because a few fuck up doesn't mean the rest are like that. There are fuck ups in everything.

A lot of my family still lives in Hartford County. When you hear about police improprieties up there it usually has to do with payola and mafia connections and stuff, not bigoted Southern redneck toughguy police-rage like what seems to go on regularly down here.

Oh man, there's not a lot that sucks more than a car wreck. Was anyone hurt? Your car totaled?

no injuries...my neck hurt a little bit for a few days but the thing is, I've had worse whiplash from headbanging so I wasn't worried about it! haha! my car is fine...just some minor bumper damage...the other guy who hit me wasn't so lucky. His car went away on a tow truck...his radiator was caved in. He needed a new hood, a whole new front end. Really sucks for him...he got the ticket. I guess that's what happens when you have a sturdy 1986 Jeep against a plastic 2004 Kia!

anyways about the cops...my boyfriend pointed something out to me about police brutality. He was on a ride along Friday night in the south precinct (i.e. The Hood!) and he and his cop got a domestic call... it was some old redneck dude calling because he said his bedridden wife would "kill him" if he went to Publix and bought a $2 chicken wing. At this point in time, there was a major chase going on and this idiot who called over a chicken wing caused them to miss the chase... they both were very pissed at that...they didn't show it to the redneck guy but my boyfriend said that if the redneck dude went off in a rage, he probably would have gotten hit. (Nobody got hit) sometimes there are situations like this stupid domestic call about a chicken wing and these situations make cops mad because it takes away their time that they could be usuing to actually get something done, like get involved in the chase. It's just an example.

Show me in which area, precinct, etc where 19 year olds graduating in the bottom 25% of 2007's graduating class (last years!) "primarily" make up the force?

It was mostly baseless generalization, the same way that saying cops exist to 'serve and protect' is a mostly baseless generalization.
