Bought my ticket several weeks ago from Kurtis (Legion X bass player). I can't wait for this show. It's a juxtaposition of the most interesting kind, the old basis for black metal, the new direction for black metal, and a kickass local band. I wonder though why the Masquerade only lists Legion X as the opening act for Celtic Frost -- you'd think they'd also want to make sure people know that Goatwhore is also on this. There is also some other band I've never heard of, called SunnO -- anyone ever heard those guys?

Yeah, we get Goatwhore on the east coast dates.

It's pretty hard to describe their sound... they're way, way out there musically, kind of like a cross between The Melvins, Burzum, and Sigur Ros. Lots of ambient stuff mixed in with droning, bludgeoning guitars mixed in with brief raspy blasts of black metal sounding stuff.

I think that it's safe to identify Sunn O))) as a collaborative project. Atilla Csihar of Mayhem, Wrest from Leviathan, and Malefic of Xathsur have all contributed vocals to their recordings. On their last album, Black One, Malefic was supposedly sealed in a coffin with a microphone for several tracks. It sounds sincerely dark. I've kind of gotten into a lot of that Southern Lord stuff lately. Like a lot of dark drone, it's not an easy listen, but a change of pace without straying too far from a really malevolent sound.

Stephen O'Malley of Sunn O))) is also in Khanate. They actually played at the Drunken Unicorn some time last year. I missed it, but I was told that the volume was so intense that people were leaving the show early feeling nauseated. I hear Sunn O))) is much the same live.

I went to that show, and I think they were leaving because Khanate was fucking boring. I went to that show to see them and I enjoyed Wolf Eyes (who I had never heard before) much more.

Sunn O))) isn't really a collaborative project, though it would seem like it from their latest album. The core group is Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson. But I agree, their stuff is somewhat listenable if you're used to stuff like, well, Xasthur.

I've never heard any of that stuff, so I have no idea what to expect. Well, Mayhem, heh, but that doesn't sound like any Mayhem I've ever heard. And whats the deal with that name and the O))) ? I don't really get it, but maybe there will be some explanation inherent in the music. But I don't really care, because Goatwhore is going to make it all worthwhile even if everyone else sucks. \M/

They take their name from the bass amp company. Their logo looks like O))). I've always said "Sun Oh" but apparently it's just pronounced "Sun" since that's the name of the amplifier brand.

From their old website: "Sunn o))) is a side project of Khanate/Burning Witch (Steve O'Malley) and Goatsnake (Greg Anderson) members. It was formed in memory of the cult drone-riff founders Earth and honors the beautiful Ozma. The Sunn o))) mission is to create trance like soundscapes with the ultimate low-end/bottom frequencies intended to massage the listeners intenstines into a act of defecation."

(*pokes around on teh intarnet*)

Yeah, it looks like they are in Ireland now.

Yeah, of course... I don't mean to imply that ANY of them are going to suck heh.

What I meant to say is... I'll forgive Sunn O))) the O))) if THEY don't suck.

LOL ... I just got the message in my email:"Friday October 27th
Celtic Frost, just added special guest :: Goatwhore Legion X
Avant-garde for their radical fusion of violent death metal and elements of classical music, Celtic Frost represents the finest in European metal. Slaying audiences since the early 80's, Celtic Frost are the forefathers of bands like Manowar and Entombed. Doors@7pm"

I have known Goatwhore would be with them for months now, since right after the Emperor show in fact; Goatwhore's had that on their profile since then.
Silly Masquerade people!
