That Malthusian is pretty cool. Sounds like the sort of thing Dark Descent would put out -- which would be nice, as I don't have a tape deck.
Speaking of Dark Descent, the single from the upcoming Thantifaxath album is out of this world.

And speaking of Ireland, the track released from Nemtheanga's other band, Dread Sovereign, is mighty promising.

Otherwise:
Fates Warning - Awaken the Guardian
Demilich - Nespithe (new remaster from higher quality source -- sounds amazing)
Odium - Sad Realm of the Stars
Spite Extreme Wing - Vltra
Cradle of Filth - Principle of Evil and Vempire (not terrible!)
Voivod - Target Earth
Pessimist - Cult of the Initiated
Absu - Tara
And of course The Satanist. I can't imagine anyone saying it isn't the best thing Behemoth have ever done.

Totally agree. Their discography is virtually flawless. I've actually been on a big Renegade kick recently after not really giving it a lot of plays in the past.badcarburetor wrote:One of the single greatest albums ever recorded in the history of ever. It never gets old.

And Chinatown is smoking. Few bands can have so many line-up changes and maintain their level of consistantly great albums. And I miss bands putting out smoking live albums like Live and Dangerous. I think that the 70s were the only great time for that kind of release.Ryan wrote:Totally agree. Their discography is virtually flawless. Started my day with Uriah Heep Live '73! You are absolutely right, the "live album" is a thing of the past and it's a shame.
That core of Gorham, Lynott, and Downey really stood the test of time taking the established "Lizzy" sound that started to really show up on Vagabonds and solidifying it on Nightlife and Fighting onwards. I am a firm believer in the power trio and even though one of the things Lizzy is most known for is the dual leads I've always thought the reason they were so good was the dynamics of the rhythm section. Those dudes were meant to play together and they did so exceptionally well. That kind of dynamic is rare to begin with but for it to remain consistent and yield so many great albums is virtually unheard of.
Honestly, I can't think of another band with a comparable discography of quality... 'Priest I suppose... 'Maiden... I guess the thing with Thin Lizzy though is that there was never any "putting albums out after their prime." Something the other two are definitely guilty of... though I honestly don't know that had Lynott survived they would have ever put out anything that wasn't good. I mean, hell, they arguably didn't put out their best albums until a decade into their career and though Black Rose is my favorite overall, Chinatown is no slouch and it's not like Nightlife through Live and Dangerous aren't all at least good (looking at you Nightlife) all the way to phenomenal.
I was thinking earlier today actually that i really wish there was more material written with Sykes involved. Cold Sweat is a jammer and one of my favorites... and probably the best song on TnL to boot.

I remember reading an interview with Karl Sanders where he not really jokingly said Thin Lizzy was the secret repository of Nile guitar leads. There was always something about this breakaway in "Smashing the Antiu" that rang familiar, generally, not specifically. He wasn't kidding!

Really though that TL sound is all over metal.
